Abstract

Sepsis is the main cause of admission and mortality in intensive care units, where 42% of patients die. It is and should be seen by all health professionals as a medical emergency, just like acute myocardial infarction or cerebrovascular disease. In sepsis, a package of measures is recommended in the first hour: measure serum lactate levels, obtain cultures, administer broad-spectrum antimicrobials, begin crystalloid administration, and apply vasopressors if the patient has low blood pressure. Diagnosis should be made as early as possible in emergency rooms, hospital wards, or the community. Treating a patient with sepsis is a challenge for the medical team. In addition to the use of technology, good clinical judgment and teamwork can reduce the mortality rate from this medical emergency.
