Affectation of the nervous system because of dengue

Abstract

Dengue is the most frequent viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes; in the last years its incidence has increased. The virus is transmitted by Aedes aegypti and, in lower degrees, by the specie Aedes albopictus. Impact of dengue may have devastated consequences. It is important for health professionals, to know the characteristics of the disease and its affectation of the nervous system, whenever the virus has a defined neurotropism. The objective of this article is to revise the affectation of the nervous system for this disease. Google scholar and the descriptors dengue, neurological and psychiatric manifestations were used. The data bases Medline, Scielo, Scopus y Medscape were also used. Dengue can present affectation of the nervous system in form of nonspecific acute neurological symptoms, acute encephalitis or focal neurological symptoms and post-infectious neurological complications.
