Characterization of patients with addictions at Mayabeque Psychiatrist Hospital

Abstract

Introduction:

Drug addiction is a health problem which affects globally humanity, it is a chronic disease of the brain, with frequent relapses characterized by the compulsive searching and consuming of toxic substances.

Objective:

To characterize patients admitted at the Alcoholic Dehabituation Service from ¨Crisanto Betancourt Hernández¨ Provincial Teaching Psychiatrist Hospital.

Methods:

A descriptive and retrospective study was carried out, in Mayabeque Province, from 2015 to 2019. The population was formed by 380 patients, who gave their informed consent to participate. The studied variables were: sex, age, source, diagnosis and permanence in the institution. As source of information, the registering book and the patients ‘charts were used. Theoretical, empiric and statistic procedures.

Results:

The male sex prevailed with a 94.7 % and the 54 to 59 age group with 22.1 %. There was a higher institutional demand of Mayabeque province, with 86.8 % and of Güines municipality in a 24.2 %. The diagnosis of patients with mental and behavior disorders prevailed, due to alcohol consumption in the 95.2 %, with an institutional permanence higher than 30 days in the 77.6 %.

Conclusions:

The male sex prevails in admitted patients, in the productive life stage, patients from Güines prevail, as well as patients with mental and behavior disorders, due to alcohol consumption and with an institutional permanence higher than 30 days.
