Pathophysiological mechanisms of COVID-19 on the nervous system

Authors

Keywords:

SARS-Cov-2, COVID -19, pathophysiology, neurological and cognitive manifestations

Abstract

Introduction:

Currently, it is clearly known that the manifestations of COVID -19 cover a wide range of neurological disorders, which are not yet well understood.

Objectives:

Exposing the main types of neurological and cognitive alterations associated with COVID-19.

Methods:

A systematic review was carried out in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Articles with free access to the full text, published in Spanish or English, were included. Duplicate studies and those with low scientific quality were excluded; they were evaluated through critical and specialized reading. 48 articles were referenced.

Conclusions:

The invasion routes of SARS-CoV-2, postulated so far, are hematogenous and transneuronal. Pathophysiological theories involve different mechanisms. There are several neurological and cognitive alterations associated with COVID-19.
